Simone de Beauvoir on Self- Consciousness - Dictionary of Arguments

Brocker I 303
Self-Consciousness/Beauvoir: "The subject only sits down by opposing itself: it has the claim to assert itself as the essential and to constitute the other as the unessential, as an object" (1). Whereby, of course, the other consciousness appears with the same claim.
Kuster: Beauvoir is influenced by contemporary philosophers, especially Kojève. The background is Hegel's study on the relationship between rule and slavery in the phenomenology of the spirit (2).
Femininity/Woman/Gender Roles/Beauvoir: Problem: the peculiarity of the relationship between man and woman is constitued in the fact that there is no struggle for recognition between them. The woman remains "the unessential that never becomes the essential, [...] the absolute other without reciprocity" (3).
